Get Pumped with Prayer

Updated: May 6, 2023

If you have ever done physical exercise you know it takes discipline. Sometimes just getting started is half the battle. If you can get your shoes on and get out the door your daily walk is almost in the bag. However, once you get a block or two down the street, feel the warm sun, see the green grass, hear the birds singing, it's a done deal. When you get back you think, "I don't know why I struggle so much to get started. I feel so much better by the time I get back."

As you can guess, prayer is exactly the same. Everything that exercise is to the body, prayer is to the spirit and much more. Weight bearing exercise builds muscle and bone. Cardio workouts build lung capacity and stamina. If the Bible is out spiritual food, prayer is out spiritual exercise. Both are needed. The good news is most of us attend church regularly and get a spiritual steak meal of Bible at least once a week. The bad news is attending church normally does not include personal prayer and only a few moments of corporate prayer. Most of the time if you want to pump up your spiritual muscles, you will have to do it on your own.

Remember what it takes to get a daily walk. Set a time and find a place. Closing your eyes and kneeling down is equivalent to putting on your walking shoes. Opening your mouth in praise to Father, recounting the ways He has blessed you is like feeling the warm sun and beginning to hear the birds sing.

Give prayer a chance. Let me know what you think.

Your brother in Christ,

Bro. Jerry
